Report – Lunar exploration for mineral deposits
in K-43. Cc Colonel Kent
Lunar exploration has been going on now for three years
with some positive results. However, the deposits would need to be large enough
to consider any mining operation to be economical and the mineral will need to
be one that is in high demand.
Use of an orbiting satellite and scanning the
terrain has been useful in targeting areas that show positive for traces of some
metals. This technology is new and it can give us an area to do a surface scan
to more closely pinpoint the target. However, a manned surface scan is necessary
to find the source.
One such scan picked up traces of metal in one
small area that is labeled K-43 on our grid. A manned surface scanning team was
sent to the K-43 area. The following story is about that surface scan.
A team of four people was picked to conduct the
search. John Phelps will lead the team. John has a degree from MIT and has been
working for LEC (lunar Exploration Corp.) for seven years with two one-year
terms on the Moon surface. John is a tall man, well built and is into athletics.
His team consists of two other men and one woman
that he hand picked from corporate files. Sheila is also tall and athletic with
a degree in biochemistry and geology. Sheila
is very attractive which was a negative for the project as John was afraid it
could cause problems with the men on the mission.
But after interviewing her, he felt that would not be a problem, as she
seemed to have that in control. She
put like this, “I have always had wolves haling at the door and learned how to
handle them early in life” She said she simply tells them she is gay and will
punch their lights out if they try to touch her. She is not gay but that is how
she keeps the wolves at bay and it works.
Another team member is Gordon, who has experience on the
moon lab before the project began and has a wealth of knowledge of the moon
surface. Gordon is a short but stocky built man who enjoys action. He use to
race motorcycles professionally and many other action sports. Gordon also has a
degree from MIT but was there after John had graduated so they never met before
this project.
The fourth team member is Jim, a young man with energy
to burn as the other members put it. Jim also has a degree in geology and is
athletic as he was active in rugby in his home town in England.
The team gets along well in the confines of the
moon lab along with the other lab technicians and people that man the moon lab
full time. Geology is not the only work that goes on at the lab. There is a
group that man a telescope and analyze and transmit data back to earth.
There is also a separate facility that no one has any contact with. It is
military and no one is allowed to have any contact with any of them.
John’s team function is to do the ground
exploration and bring samples back to the lab for analysis.
This new field trip will take several earth days to complete and will require the team to set up camp several times and travel some distance from the safety of the lab station. Two lunar vehicles will be used partly for safety and to make it easier to carry the equipment.
